音声言語の挫折がテーマである。高名な歴史学者と生物学者の知的語り芸ともいうべき「学術講演」に続いて、サーカス団員が登場し、四つの音曲芸でオーラル言語を揶揄する。
フェルディナン・ド・ソシュールの論文1878年「インド・ヨーロッパ語の覚書」によって、言語の構造的あるいはメタ的な解明が始まる。
