Since the 60s, Shiro Takahashi as an artist created a form of compute r controlled art that would go on to be known as his “3-D Mechanical Series”. This trailblazing new form of art was featured in many exhibitions including Expo’ 70. In the 80s, he developed his “Pneumatic Sculpture Series” using balloons for material, and had his work featured all over the world becoming widely adored and acquiring mass fame.
Not only did Shiro Takahashi play a leading role in bringing computers and technology to art, but he was also very well known around the world for his research on a form of Islamic art called “Muqarnas”. In the 2000s, he served as President of Tama Art University while producing an array of talented graduates to the world as a practitioner of a unique form of education in the field of Information Art.
This exhibition features a collection of works from Shiro Takahashi that showcase the culmination of his “Pneumatic Sculptures” series– a form of art that he continued for many his collection of works is considered to challenge Japan’s Kojiki– a large set of ancient japanes stories and myths referred to as the “Record of Ancient Records”– because Shiro Takahashi attempted to base the works in this exhibition on these legendary myths. Shiro Takahashi mastered the culture and full history of how people use “Ki ”– a concept that refers to the human spirit, mind, and energy– from ancient to modern times. This mastery led tohim being able to bring the “Kiusoudai”– a concept that means magnanimous and grand in one's manindset or ideas– of the Gods who appear in the stories and myths ofKojikito the 21st century using his original “Pneumatic Technology”.
One could say that here within the nature - rich Ikuta Ryokuchi, the Gods from Japan’s Kojiki have returned to us through Shiro Takahashi’s portrayal of the same laid -back life style of Izumo and his imagination.
In these plot-twisting and humorous myths, there is an opportunity to rediscover the Japanese perspective on nature, and the myths themselves also seem to imply a desire for the world to be reborn anew.
