In a conventional rigid formative object, when its size is expanded
twice bigger, its weight sharply increases 8 times, and as a consequence
the strength of the object, which is proportional to the cross-section
of the object, becomes inadequate, and the object finally collapses
by itself. It is impossible to expand the size and weight of a conventional
rigid formative object at the same ratio.
On the contrary, since the weight of a pneumatic sculpture is proportional to its surface area, as the volume of the pneumatic membrane object increases, it becomes relatively lighter. Moreover, since a pneumatic sculpture is not affected by the gravity, it can be freely expanded or contracted. According to the method for the pneumatic sculpture, a gigantic mobile formative object can be designed and produced only by desk work. As the theory of pneumatic formative object that can be formed by itself with the aid of the distribution of surface tension has been getting clear, the application of advanced technology of CAD/CAM to the production of a gigantic pneumatic sculpture has now become possible. |
